The portal axles are definitely one of the many strengths of the Unimog.A portal axle is a special type of driven axle with a countershaft transmission on each of the vehicle wheels.The wheel carriers each contain a single-stage spur gear acting on the shafts from the wheels.The axle bridge with the drive shafts is therefore offset parallel to the wheel axles.This special design enables a high ground clearance - perfect for the Unimog.
